Tooth Contouring and Reshaping
Tooth contouring and reshaping corrects minor imperfections in your smile. Some examples of common cosmetic problems appropriate for this procedure include:
- Overlapping teeth
- Irregularly shaped teeth
- Tiny chips
- Excessively pointy cuspids
What to expect with tooth contouring and reshaping
During this procedure, Dr. Tapia removes a small amount of enamel from the outermost layer of your tooth for the purpose of tooth reshaping. She may also combine dental contouring with bonding, a cosmetic dentistry procedure that shapes and sculpts the teeth with tooth colored composite materials.
Dr. Tapia uses special abrasion techniques and dental instruments to perform tooth reshaping. Typically, she takes one or more dental X-rays before starting the procedure to ensure your teeth are healthy enough to withstand it. After marking the area of your tooth you want treated, she begins using a sanding instrument to minimize or eliminate the imperfections on your tooth’s outer surface. Dr. Tapia cleans and polishes all of your teeth once she has finished reshaping the tooth.
Advantages to consider
One of the most attractive things about tooth contouring and reshaping is the cost. Although you don’t get the same dramatic effect with this procedure that you would get with porcelain veneers, it is significantly less expensive than other forms of cosmetic dentistry, which we understand is important when you’re paying out of pocket. Other considerations that may factor into your decision include:
- Can be a substitute for braces in cases of minor overlapping
- Little to no discomfort since Dr. Tapia only removes surface-level tooth enamel
- Improves oral health by making it easier to clean plaque and tartar
