6,500 Year Tooth Found with Beeswax Filling

It just might be that dentistry is the world’s oldest profession.  On September 19, 2012 Italian researchers published an article in the journal PLoS One that may provide evidence of early dentistry.  A 6,500-year-old human jawbone was discovered with a beeswax filling.  The beeswax was probably applied to ease pain from a crack in the enamel and dentin layers of the tooth, said Claudio Tuniz, a nuclear paleoanthropologist at the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics in Italy.  Read More
